[00:00:01]
THIS MEETING OF THE CULTURE AND DIVERSITY CITIZEN ACTION COMMISSION IS CALLED TO ORDER AT 7:02 PM.
CAN I PLEASE GET A ROLL CALL? DR.
AKINS, MISS HONAKER, MS. NEWBIE PRESENT MS. PURVIS PRESENT MR. RAMIREZ, MR. RICHARDSON, PRESENT MR. STEVENS, MS. STEVENS PRESENT WITH SOMEONE.
AND MR. STEVENS WILL, UM, BE A LITTLE LATE TONIGHT.
UM, LIKE TO RECOGNIZE OUR GUESTS THAT WE HAVE IN THE AUDIENCE.
SHE'S A RETURN VISITOR WITH US AND, UH, OWNER.
ALL RIGHT, SO WE HAVE APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES FROM OUR LAST MEETING.
ARE THERE ANY AMENDMENTS TO THE MEETING MINUTES FROM OCTOBER 7TH? WE DID HAVE ONE GUESTS.
HIGGINS WAS HERE LAST YEAR, LAST WEEK, THIS MONTH, RIGHT? THERESA AKINS.
AND THAT, I DON'T THINK THAT WAS NOT REFLECTED IN THE MINUTES.
THERESA AKINS WAS WITH US LAST WEEK.
SO THAT'S THE ONLY AMENDMENT THAT I HAVE TO THE MINUTES.
SO CALL THE VOTE TO APPROVE THE MINUTES AS RENT WITH THE ONE ADDITION OR THE ONE MODIFICATION ALL IN FAVOR.
IN OPPOSITION THAT HAS BEEN PROPERLY ACCEPTED.
WE'LL MOVE TO OUR COMMITTEE REPORTS.
WE'RE GOING TO START WITH EDUCATION TONIGHT.
EVERYBODY HOPE EVERYONE AS WELL.
THIS EVENING, THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE, WE HAD OUR STANDING MEETING ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 26 AT THE PAPER HEIGHTS POLICE DEPARTMENT.
AND THE FOCUS OF THAT MEETING.
WE TALKED ABOUT SEVERAL ITEMS. THE FIRST ITEM THAT WE DISCUSSED WAS AN OVERVIEW LESSONS LEARNED FOR OUR SECOND FORUM ON BEHALF OF THE COMMISSION, WHERE AGAIN, THE TOPIC WAS RACISM IS A PUBLIC HEALTH AND THE FARM WAS HELD ON WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 13TH AT THE HUBER HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CENTER.
AT FIRST, I JUST WANT TO SAY THANK YOU TO THE ENTIRE COMMISSION, TO THE HUBER HEIGHTS, CITY COUNCIL LEADERSHIP AND TO OUR RESIDENTS AND THE COMMUNITY THAT DID ATTEND.
WE HAD ABOUT 30 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE, WHICH INCLUDE SEVEN OF OUR HUBER HEIGHTS CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS, WHICH WAS GOOD IN TERMS OF VIRTUAL ATTENDANCE.
WE HAD ABOUT 227 VIEWS ON FACEBOOK, WHICH IS GOOD.
AND I'M SURE WE'LL HAVE MORE, WE'LL ENCOURAGE MORE FOR THOSE TO REVIEW THE RECORDING FOR REFERENCE DURING THIS FORUM, THERE WAS SOME GOOD PRODUCTIVE DIALOGUE FROM THOSE THAT ATTENDED, WHICH INCLUDED SOME INFORMATION THAT ONE OF OUR PANEL GUESTS, DR.
MICHAEL DULIN PRESENTED, WHICH WAS A WORKBOOK IN DR.
AKINS, THANK YOU FOR RECOMMENDING HIM FOR THE INFORMATION.
AND AS FAR AS THE WORKBOOK IS LIKE A STANDING TEMPLATE, A GUIDE, SO TO SPEAK FOR THE COMMISSION AND THE CITY COUNCIL TO TALK ABOUT HOW WE CAN BE MORE PROACTIVE IN WORKING WITH RESIDENTS IN THE CITY TO LIBERATE HEALTH DISPARITIES.
SO WE DEFINITELY WANT TO CONTINUE THAT DISCUSSION BE PROACTIVE WITH THAT.
NOW, AS FAR AS, UM, 2022 HAS STATED IN PREVIOUS COMMISSION MEETINGS, WE WANT TO HAVE TWO FORUMS. THE FIRST FORUM AS ALREADY DISCUSSED, WE WANT TO HAVE IN JANUARY OF 2022, AND THAT WILL BE A COLLABORATION
[00:05:01]
WITH THE REFORM COMMITTEE AND MR. STEVENS, WHEN THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE MET THE DATE THAT WE WANT TO PROPOSE TO YOU TO ADDRESS TO CHIEF FLATTENER IS WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 12TH.AND FOR THE FOCUS OF THAT FORUM IS GOING TO BE VERY INFORMAL, UM, A MEET AND GREET WITH THE HIPPER HEIGHTS POLICE CHIEF, BUT ALSO WE WANT TO INVITE OTHER POLICE CHIEFS AND THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY TO ENGAGE IN THE DISCUSSION.
I FEEL LIKE IT'S GOOD TO DEVELOP THAT RAPPORT, THAT RELATIONSHIP, YOU KNOW, WITH OTHER, UM, CITIES AS FAR AS HOW THEIR POLICING IS.
SO IF CHIEF FLIGHT NURSE IS AVAILABLE, UM, PLEASE, IF YOU DON'T MIND TO FOLLOW UP WITH HIM ON THAT DAY AND THE TIME WILL BE THE SAME AS THE LAST FORUM, 6:30 PM AT THE COOPER HEIGHTS COMMUNITY CENTER.
AGAIN, I THINK THAT IS A GREAT FACILITY, NO COST AT ALL, SPACIOUS ENOUGH ROOM TO SPREAD OUT BECAUSE WE'LL STILL BE DEALING WITH THE PANDEMIC.
AND THE SECOND FORUM THAT WE WANT TO HAVE FOR NEXT YEAR WOULD BE IT CONTINUATION OF THE RACISM IS A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS.
WE WANT TO FOCUS ON SOME OTHER ASPECTS THAT WAS ILLUSTRATED IN THE PROCLAMATION, SUCH AS SYSTEMATIC RACISM IN TERMS OF EDUCATION, UM, ECONOMY AND SOCIETY.
AND THE COMMITTEE HAD DISCUSSED WHEN TO HAVE THIS, AND WE WANT TO HAVE IT DURING THE WEEK OF OUR JUNETEENTH AND, UM, OUR FATHER'S DAY FUNK FESTIVAL EVENT.
SO IT'S GOOD TO HAVE, YOU KNOW, THAT EVENT TO HAVE A DIALOGUE DURING THAT TIME, WHICH I THINK WE'LL GET EVEN MORE PARTICIPATION, YOU KNOW, FOR THAT.
SO THOSE ARE THE KEY ITEMS THAT THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE HAD ADDRESSED AND WE'LL BE WORKING ON INTO THE NEW YEAR, BUT THAT IS ALL HAVE TO REPORT MADAM CHAIR.
LET'S JUST ANY QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS ABOUT ANYTHING HAVING READ THE FOLLOWING SATURDAY THREE EVENTS IN THE WEEK, UH, FROM OUR DISCUSSION AND DR.
AKINS, CORRECT ME IF I'M RIGHT OR WRONG DURING THAT WEEK, WE WENT TO HAVE THIS ONE FORUM THAT WILL BE PART OF OUR TOO, AS A COMMITTEE.
BUT I THINK I SEE WHAT YOU'RE ASKING ME.
SO THERE WOULD BE THREE EVENTS DURING THAT WEEK.
AND THEN THE DIALOGUE AND THEN MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL.
SO THAT'S, THAT'S I AGREE WITH HAVING IT AT THE TIME WISE.
I'M JUST THINKING THAT'S A LOT, BUT ON THE COMMITTEE, OUR COMMISSIONS PLATE FOR ONE WEEK, I MEAN, ONCE WE HAVE FULL EVENTS, THAT'S JUST MY CONCERN.
WELL, AS WE DISCUSSED IN THE MEETING, UM, ON THE 26TH, UH, THAT WE WANTED TO DO A CULTURE WEEK AND STARTING OFF WITH THAT, THAT, UH, THAT FATHER'S DAY FOLK FESTIVAL IN JUNE ON JUNE 10TH AND THEN KIND OF ENCOMPASSED THE REST OF THE WEEK, ENDING UP WITH THE CULTURE FESTIVAL, BEING ON SATURDAY AND TO HAVE THAT, UM, THAT, UH, THAT FORUM IN THERE THAT SECOND RACISM IS A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS IS KIND OF, KIND OF FITTING TO BRING THAT BACK.
SO IS THAT AT SUCH A GOOD COMMUNITY RESPONSE? UM, WE HAD, AND, AND JEAN AND I, AND, AND OTHER MEMBERS OF WHERE PRESIDENT KENNEDY TALK TO, I THINK ABOUT IT.
AND, UM, YEAH, SO YOU DIDN'T MISS A BEAT, BUT, UM, THAT'S, THAT'S KIND OF WHERE WE WERE GOING WITH THAT.
AND WE'RE GONNA KIND OF FIGURE OUT TWO MORE, MAYBE TWO MORE MINUTES TO PUT IT IN, IN THE COURSE OF THAT WEEK TO KIND OF ENCAPSULATE THE REST OF THAT.
WE COULD JUST MAKE IT A CULTURE WE GET.
THANK YOU FOR REMINDING ME ABOUT THAT.
SO THE FOCUS WAS TO HAVE A CULTURE WEEK TO INCLUDE THOSE EVENTS.
SO THAT'S WHY WE THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BEST TO HAVE THAT FORUM INTO THE OTHER FESTIVITIES DURING THAT WEEK.
SO TO ADD TO THAT, IF YOU DON'T MIND, IT IS GOING TO TAKE ALL OF THE MEMBERS OF THIS COMMISSION AND MAYBE TWO OR THREE OTHERS TO HELP US PULL THAT OFF SUCCESSFULLY.
AND WE'LL GET A LOT OF VOLUNTEERS FROM THE, FROM THE COMMUNITY AND HELP US OUT WITH THAT ENDEAVOR COUNCIL FOLKS, SOME STAFF, YOU KNOW, YES, I CONCUR 100%.
[00:10:02]
I THINK THAT'S ALSO SOMETHING WE COULD PUT OUT FOR THE SCHOOL TO BUY SCHOOL.AND WE DID TALK ABOUT THAT TOO.
I BELIEVE AS FAR AS ENGAGING THE HIGH SCHOOL, THE YOUTH AND THE COMMUNITY, YOU KNOW, DURING THAT WEEK, YOU KNOW, THEY NEED TO BE EDUCATED AS FAR AS WHAT JUNETEENTH IS SINCE NOW, IT'S GOING TO BE OBSERVED AS A HOLIDAY IN THE THIS COUNTRY.
SO I THINK THAT'S VERY IMPORTANT THAT WE INCORPORATE THEM INTO THAT.
MS. NEWBIE, YOU HAD A QUESTION ABOUT THE, UH, EDUCATIONAL FORUMS, ONE OF MY FAVORITE PART OF THE COMMISSION HANDS DOWN, UH, BECAUSE IT PROVIDES, YOU KNOW, EDUCATION TO THE COMMUNITY, WHICH A LOT OF PEOPLE WEREN'T EDUCATED ON THIS MATERIAL, UH, AND BEING EDUCATED ON THE MATERIAL IS A HUGE WIN IN ITSELF.
UH, ON THE FLIP SIDE OF THAT, WE'RE EXTENDING, YOU KNOW, THE, THE EDUCATIONAL REACH THAT THE WORK THAT YOU'RE COMMITTED TO PUTTING GONE.
HAS THERE BEEN ANY THOUGHT ON TRYING TO TIE IN HOW PUBLIC POLICY CAN ACHIEVE THESE TYPE OF ISSUES WITHIN THE COMMUNITY? SO TAGGING ON NOT ONLY THE EDUCATIONAL VIEWPOINT, BUT ALSO EDUCATING FUTURE AND CURRENT POLITICIANS, MAYORS REPRESENTATIVES, ET CETERA, ON HOW TO TIE THESE EDUCATION ISSUES AND IMPLEMENT THEM THROUGH PUBLIC POLICY.
I THINK WE BRIEFLY TALKED ABOUT THAT, BUT ABSOLUTELY.
WE WANT TO INCORPORATE THAT GOING FORWARD IN THE FUTURE.
CAUSE I THINK, UM, MS. SIMON, YOU HAVE BROUGHT TO OUR ATTENTION AND, UM, ONE OF OUR GUESTS THIS EVENING, MRS. NEWBIE, AS FAR AS LEGISLATION FOR, UM, THE STATE IN TERMS OF BILLS THAT THE HOUSE AND SENATE WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF, THAT WOULD KIND OF FOCUS ON WHAT WE ARE ADVOCATING AS COMMISSION, BUT YEAH, DEFINITELY.
WE'RE GOING TO INCORPORATE MORE OF THAT IN THE FUTURE.
AND ESPECIALLY WITH NEXT YEAR, WE HAVE SOME MAJOR, UM, RACIST, YOU KNOW, FOR THE STATE AND THERE'S GOING TO BE SOME SIGNIFICANT ISSUES ON THE TABLE.
SO DEFINITELY WE'LL, YOU KNOW, ENCOURAGE THAT.
AND ALLOW ME TO ADD TO THAT MS. NOVIA, THE MAYOR WAS THERE AND HAD A LOT OF EMPATHIZE.
HE SEEMED LIKE HE WAS LEGITIMATELY SURPRISED AT THE CONTENT AND THAT THERE'S SOME THINGS THAT HE PLANNED TO HELP US HELP INITIATE.
UM, AND I THINK, UH, HIS BIG ONE, IT SEEMS LIKE ONE OF HIS BIGGEST CONCERNS WAS ACCESS TO HEALTHCARE.
UM, AND, AND TO PUT SOME OF THOSE THINGS IN PLACE.
AND I DON'T KNOW IF YOU'VE READ THE DOCUMENT THAT I SENT OUT AFTER THAT FROM THE ONE TO WHICH MISSILE, UH, NEWBIE ALLUDED EARLIER WAS THE DOCUMENT FROM DR.
MICHAEL DOLAN WAS A PRETTY COMPREHENSIVE APPROACH, RIGHT.
TO MAKING CHANGE IN, IN, IN COMMUNITIES AND SPECIFICALLY FOR THOSE FOLKS WHO LEAD IN CITY GOVERNMENT.
AND I THINK IF YOU, IF YOU HAD AN OPPORTUNITY TO LOOK AT THAT, YOU'LL SEE HOW SOME OF THOSE THINGS CAN TRANSLATE INTO POLICY CHANGES, RIGHT.
INDEFINITELY, YOU KNOW, AS A COMMISSION, ONE OF OUR, I'LL SAY RESPONSIBILITIES IS TO SERVE THIS, THAT ADVISORY CAPACITY TO CITY COUNCIL.
DULIN NO REFERENCE TO US AND TO CITY COUNCIL, WE DEFINITELY CAN REVIEW IT, RECOMMEND TO THEM HOW WE CAN CREATE THOSE INITIATIVES FOR THE CITY.
SO DEFINITELY WOULD MAKE SURE THAT WE CONTINUE WITH THAT RESPONSIBILITY AS A COMMISSION.
QUESTION, ARE YOU DOING, UH, REGARDING THE, UH, THE FORUM WITH, UH, WITH THE POLICE CHIEF, UM, EVERY DECIDE OF HOW YOU PLAY TO FACILITATE THAT WHEN YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE, FOR EXAMPLE, ARE YOU GONNA HAVE, UH, QUESTIONS IN ADVANCED AND WITH A QUESTION JUST COME FROM THE COMMITTEE OR HOW DO YOU PLAN TO RUN OR TO FACILITATE THAT FOR HIM? WELL, I FIGURED IF YOU KNOW THAT I CAN ANSWER THAT FOR YOU, JAY WE'LL JUST STAND THEM UP DOWN AND FIRE QUESTIONS AT HIM.
UM, NO, I'M JUST KIDDING REALLY.
THIS, THIS IS NOT, THE INTENT IS NOT TO AMBUSH THE CHIEF, RIGHT? THAT'S NOT THE INTENT.
THE INTENT IS, UH, TO, TO SHARE SOME OF THE THINGS, SOME OF THE TRAINING, SOME OF THE INTERACTIONS THAT YOU HAVE HAD EVEN WITH THE POLICE, UH, WHAT, UH, WHAT THE POLICE DEPARTMENT HERE IN THE CITY AND SHARE SOME OF THOSE THINGS THAT WE ARE DOING IN YOUR BRIDES TO KEEP THOSE THINGS FROM HAPPENING AND IT'S HAPPENING IN OTHER PLACES RIGHT NOW, RIGHT? LIKE WHERE ARE WE GETTING OUR POLICE FROM? WHAT KIND OF, YOU KNOW, WHAT KIND OF EDUCATION DO THEY HAVE? WHAT KIND OF INTERACTION DO WE DO? WE GIVE THEM IN COMMUNITIES OF, UH, WHERE THERE'S PEOPLE OF COLOR AND MAKE SURE THAT THOSE THINGS THAT ARE HAPPENING AROUND THE COUNTRY REALLY DON'T HAPPEN HERE IN NEW BRIDES.
AND THIS IS REALLY SOMETHING, NO, NO, THAT'S GOOD.
I JUST THINK IT MAY BE GOOD FOR US TO, IF THOSE ARE THESE CAPTURE, THOSE FOCUS AREAS, RIGHT.
SO AT LEAST HE'S SOMEWHAT PREPARED, RIGHT.
FOR WHAT WE WANT TO DISCUSS, WHAT WE WANT TO HAVE HIM DISCUSS WITH, UH, YOU KNOW, WITH THE GROUP, RIGHT.
OR WITH, UM, WITH THE COMMUNITY.
SO BE GOOD TO SOMEWHAT KIND OF CATCH IT.
WE CAN DO LIKE A, UM, WE CAN MEET AND KINDA LIKE COLLABORATE
[00:15:01]
AS FAR AS WHAT'S GOING TO BE THE, YOU KNOW, AGENDA FOR THAT NIGHT.YOU KNOW, WHAT QUESTIONS BE ONE HIM AND OUR OTHER GUESTS TO BE PREPARED TO ASK IN ADVANCE.
SO WE STILL WANNA MAKE SURE IT IS, YOU KNOW, INFORMAL WHERE WE CAN ALLOW PEOPLE TO ENGAGE AND ASK THEIR QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS.
SO DEFINITELY, YOU KNOW, BETWEEN REFORM AND EDUCATION, WE HAVE TO MEET SOMETIME, I GUESS.
WELL, YOU KNOW WHAT, I, I MENTIONED THIS, UM, I THINK I BROUGHT THIS UP DURING OUR LAST COMMITTEE MEETING FRED, UM, INVITE THE REFORM COMMITTEE TO ATTEND ONE OF OUR EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETINGS.
CAUSE REALLY THAT'S GOING TO BE THE NEXT MAIN EVENT THAT WE HAVE TO PLAN FOR.
WE CAN JUST WORK TOGETHER, YOU KNOW, COLLABORATE AND PLAN, YOU KNOW, THE PROGRAM IN PERSON.
WELL, WE CAN INVITE YOU ALL TO ARMY
UH, SHE WAS LEAVING WITH THE THIRD MONDAY OF EACH MONTH.
SO NOW WE ALREADY HAVE ONE THAT WE'RE WORKING TO HAVE THIS MONTH.
SO, SO MAYBE WE DO IT IN DECEMBER AND WE CAN MAKE THAT THE MEETING FOR, YEAH, WELL, WE'LL TALK, BUT I THINK IT'D BE BEST FOR US TO MAKE, LIKE YOU SAID, THE THIRD WEEK IN DECEMBER AND YOU KNOW, IF POSSIBLE, NO BRIEFLY WE CAN ATTEND YOUR MEETINGS THIS MONTH, YOU KNOW? CAUSE LIKE, YOU KNOW, YOU MAY HAVE JUST SAID, YOU KNOW, WITH THE HOLIDAYS COMING UP, WE DON'T WANT TO, YOU KNOW, WELL, WHAT WERE THE REASON? WELL, THE, THE MEETING THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT AUGUST, I MENTIONED WHEN I GET TO MY REPORT.
SO WE'RE THE MEETING THAT WE'RE LOOKING AT HAVING THIS MONTH IS WITH THE POLICE CHIEF.
SO, UM, IT'LL BE FOCUSED ON A PARTICULAR TOPIC, SO BE ABLE TO HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY.
SO, UM, SO Y'ALL MEETING ON THE 15TH, THE 15TH WITH THE POLICE CHIEF, BUT UH, BUT AGAIN TO TALK ABOUT SOME OTHER THINGS, BUT OKAY.
WE DON'T WANT TO, YOU KNOW, UM, INTERFERE WITH YOUR FOCUS FOR THAT MEETING.
SO WHAT WE CAN DO IS WAIT UNTIL DECEMBER OKAY.
AND MEET THEM AND WE CAN JUST TALK OFFLINE.
AND IF I MIGHT, ONE THING THAT MIGHT BE, UH, PRUDENT THAT WHEN YOU HAVE YOUR CONVERSATION WITH THE CHIEF AND ABOUT THE DATE IS TO, UH, SEE IF HE'LL SHARE SOME OF THE CORE COMPETENCIES OF THE, UH, POLICE DEPARTMENT HERE AND UM, AND IN YOUR BEHIND SO THAT HE CAN, UH, GIVE US MAYBE SOME, SOME POINTS ON WHICH TO, UH, TO START THE CONVERSATION AT THE, UH, YEAH.
AND THEN THAT WAY IT'LL KIND OF EASE HIM IN A LITTLE MORE COMFORTABLY.
THANK YOU FOR SUGGESTING THAT.
SO IN TERMS OF THE ADDITIONAL POLICE CHIEFS, WILL THEY BE A PART OF A PANEL AND MR. A CERTAIN NUMBER OF PEOPLE IN THE PANEL? HOW I THINK WHAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT, CAUSE WE MENTIONED WE EVER SIDE VANDELIA, THOSE WERE THE ONLY ONES THAT WE TALKED ABOUT.
SO IT COULD BE A PANEL LIKE DISCUSSION AS WITH PRIOR.
JUST SO THAT I'M CLEAR ON THAT, RIGHT.
SO IT TURNS INTO DIVIDED THE OTHER POLICE CHIEFS.
WERE YOU PLANNING TO REACH OUT TO THOSE DEPARTMENTS OR DID YOU WANT, ARE YOU ASKING US TO REACH, IF YOU ALL DO NOT MIND? UM, CHIEF LIGHTENER I'M NOT SURE WHAT HE HAS WITH THEM.
I'LL I'LL WE'LL AT LEAST ASK THE QUESTION.
I WOULD SAY THE SOONER, THE BETTER JANUARY 12TH IS COMING VERY QUICKLY, VERY QUICK.
UM, AND WE DEFINITELY WANT TO GET ON THEIR CALENDARS AND KNOW THE ADDITIONAL POLICE CHIEFS SO THAT THEY CAN BLOCK THAT OFF.
AND WE HAVE ADEQUATE TIME TO PREPARE THE QUESTIONS, UM, AND GET THOSE TO THEM.
YOUR COMMITTEE HAS DONE A FABULOUS JOB, FABULOUS JOB, AND YOU'VE DONE A GREAT JOB PREPARING YOUR PANELISTS ALSO.
AND I KNOW HOW MUCH WORK YOU'VE PUT INTO THAT AND MEETING WITH THEM AND DISCUSSING THE QUESTIONS AND ALL THE PREPARATION AND HARD WORK.
I REALLY APPRECIATE YOU AS THE CHAIR AND THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU ALL DO.
UM, THE FORUM TURNED OUT VERY NICE.
I HEARD VERY GOOD COMMENTS ABOUT IT AND I HEARD A LOT OF, OH, WE NEED TO CONTINUE THE CONVERSATION.
SO I'M GLAD THAT THAT IS ON THE RADAR TO CONTINUE THAT CONVERSATION.
THAT'S GOOD TO HEAR THAT, THAT, SO I THINK IN THE FUTURE, PROBABLY WHAT WE WANT TO DO BECAUSE, UM,
[00:20:01]
ESPECIALLY THAT WE'RE GETTING A LOT OF FEEDBACK TO MAKE SURE THAT WE INCORPORATE SOME TYPE OF SURVEY OR ASSESSMENT.UM, AND IT COULD BE A QR CODE OR IT COULD BE A HANDWRITTEN SOMETHING SIMPLE, BUT YEAH, I THINK THAT WOULD BE GOOD SO WE CAN HAVE CONTINUOUS FEEDBACK.
YEAH, THAT IS EXCELLENT SUGGESTION.
CAUSE I THOUGHT ABOUT THAT TOO.
UM, WE CAN DO LIKE A SURVEY THAT WILL BE THERE FOR THOSE WHO PHYSICALLY AREN'T IN ATTENDANCE.
THOSE WHO ARE NOT, THAT MAY BE VIEWING IT.
MAYBE WE CAN DO SOMETHING THROUGH SURVEY MONKEY.
THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE CAN DISCUSS AS A COMMITTEE, BUT YEAH.
DEVIN WILL HAVE THAT TYPE OF YES.
THAT'S ALL THE QUESTIONS I HAD.
THANK YOU, MS. NEWBIE AND THE EDUCATION COMMITTEE.
WE'RE GOING TO MOVE TO ADVOCACY.
I'M GOING TO DO THE RECAP FOR ADVOCACY TONIGHT.
UM, ADVOCACY MET ON OCTOBER 20TH.
UM, ALL OF THE COMMITTEE MEMBERS WERE IN ATTENDANCE AND WE ARE WORKING ON SOME, UM, COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES, UM, TO DRAW IN, UM, OTHER GROUPS THAT ARE WORKING ON THE SAME INITIATIVES OR SIMILAR INITIATIVES TO WORK TOGETHER COLLECTIVELY.
UM, WE'RE LOOKING TO HOLD SOME TYPE OF A HOLIDAY MEET AND GREET MAY BE LIKE A HOT CHOCOLATE BAR OR SOMETHING.
UM, THAT'S GOING TO BE, WE'RE HOPING FOR LATE JANUARY TO HOLD THAT EVENT.
AND THEN WE'RE ALSO CONSIDERING DOING, UM, MAYBE LIKE A COMMUNITY KIND OF SCAVENGER HUNT TYPE EVENT.
UM, BUT IT HAS TO HAVE LIKE A FOCUS ON THINGS WE CAN DO TO DISPEL ISSUES AND EDUCATE, UM, COMMUNITY MEMBERS AT THE SAME TIME.
UM, WE'RE REALLY CONSIDERING DOING LIKE AN EDUCATIONAL TYPE SCAVENGER HUNT WITH EACH STOP BEING A DIFFERENT EDUCATIONAL PIECE OR HISTORICAL PERSON OR, UM, EVENT IN HISTORY AS WELL AS LIKE THE SCAVENGER HUNT PART OF IT.
SO, UM, THEN WE'RE DEFINITELY GOING TO LOOK TOWARDS, WE KIND OF MISSED AND MAKE A DIFFERENT STATE IN 2021, BUT THAT'S SOMETHING, UM, 2022, IT'S HELD IN OCTOBER EVERY YEAR, UM, THAT WE ARE GOING TO LOOK TO DOING SOME TYPE OF A COMMUNITY EVENT OR COMMISSION TYPE EVENT FOR MAKE A DIFFERENCE DAY IN 2022.
WE DON'T REALLY WANT THAT ONE TO GET PAST US AGAIN WITHOUT DOING SOMETHING.
AND THAT'S ABOUT IT FOR ADVOCACY.
UM, WE WILL MEET AGAIN THE WEEK AFTER NOVEMBER 15TH.
IS THAT THE DAY? THAT'S THE DAY BEFORE THANKSGIVING, RIGHT? NOPE.
PROBABLY WON'T BE MADE IN THAT DAY.
I'LL BE MAKING PIES AND COOKING LIKE MAD WOMAN.
SO LET'S GET, OKAY, SO THEN WE'LL MEET PROBABLY WE BE ABSENT FOR THAT ONE.
THIS MR. ERIC STEVEN'S BIRTHDAY.
UM, SO TO ADD THE, IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT WE, UM, TALKED ABOUT ALSO IN THE ADVOCACY WAS LOOKING AT THE BID PROCESS FOR YEAH.
UM, AND SO THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE'RE DOING SOME RESEARCH ON LOOKING AT HOW OTHER CITIES ARE INCORPORATING, UM, MAKING SURE THAT MINORITY BUSINESSES HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO FAIRLY PARTICIPATE IN THE BID PROCESS AND CREATING THAT
[00:25:01]
EQUITY IN THAT PROCESS.SO WE ARE RESEARCHING THAT AND WE'LL BE MOVING A RECOMMENDATION TO COUNCIL MOVING FORWARD, UM, LIKELY NEXT MONTH.
ANYTHING ELSE? ALRIGHT, THANK YOU.
SO THE REFORM COMMITTEE HELD ITS LAST MEETING ON 25 OCTOBER.
UH, FOLKS THAT MEETING WAS LARGELY ON THE STRATEGIC PAN STRATEGIC PLAN FOR OUR DIVERSE WORKFORCE WITHIN THE POLICE DEPARTMENT.
IT'S KIND OF TIED TO ONE OF THE DRAFT RECOMMENDATIONS THAT WE HAD THAT WE SORT OF PUT ON HOLD SO THAT WE CAN SO THAT WE CAN HAVE FURTHER DISCUSSIONS ABOUT IT.
UM, SO PRIOR TO THAT MEETING, WE REACHED OUT TO THE POLICE CHIEF TO ASK IF THERE WERE ANY, UM, UM, DOCUMENTS OR POLICIES OTHER THAN THE GENERAL ORDERS THAT SPOKE TO, UM, HOW THEY WERE, UH, PURSUING A DIVERSE WORKFORCE, IF YOU WILL.
AND SO HIS RESPONSE WAS HE SENT US A FEW ATTACHMENTS AND PRETTY MUCH JUST CAPTURED, UM, APPLICATION POSTING FOR A COUPLE OF JOBS.
UM, I FORGET WHAT THE POSITIONS WERE, BUT THERE WERE LIKE TWO POSITIONS JUST KIND OF DESCRIBE WHAT THE PROCESS IS FOR APPLYING FOR A POSITION.
AND THEN HE MENTIONED THAT THERE WAS A RECRUITING VIDEO THAT WAS ON FACEBOOK, ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE THAT I GUESS WAS SUPPOSED TO EMPHASIZE DIVERSITY.
I COULDN'T FIND THE VIDEO, BUT, UH, I THINK TARA MAY HAVE FOUND IT.
AND, UM, BUT THAT WAS ABOUT THE EXTENT OF WHAT WE SAW WHEN HE, UH, WITH REGARDS TO, UM, I GUESS DIVERSITY RECRUITING, RECRUITING IT AND WHAT THEY'RE DOING TO TRY AND EMPHASIZE THAT.
SO THEN, UM, SO THEN YEAH, WE KIND OF BEGAN A DISCUSSION ON, ON, UM, YOU KNOW, WHAT CAN WE BE DONE? WHAT CAN BE DONE TO ENHANCE, UH, DIVERSITY HIRING EFFORTS? SO, SO IT CAME UP WITH SORT OF, I GUESS, WITH THREE IDEAS OR INITIATIVES, YOU KNOW, ONE, UH, WAS TO MAYBE HAVE THE POLICE DEPARTMENT, YOU KNOW, REACH OUT TO A MINORITY ORGANIZATIONS LIKE, UM, LIKE NOBLE, UH, WHICH STANDS FOR NATIONAL ORGANIZATIONS OF BLACK LAW ENFORCEMENT EXECUTIVES.
SO, UM, YOU KNOW, MAYBE PUSHING POSTINGS IF THE JOB OPENINGS, RIGHT.
SO AT LEAST, YOU KNOW, WE HAVE THERE'S OPPORTUNITIES TO POTENTIALLY PULL FROM, FROM, FROM THAT, FROM THAT POOL.
ALSO WE TALKED ABOUT, UH, POTENTIALLY, YOU KNOW, HAVING THE, YOU KNOW, WHEN THERE ARE POSTINGS, THERE ARE OPENINGS AVAILABLE RIGHT AFTER THE POLICE DEPARTMENT ADVERTISE IT, MAYBE SOME OF THE OTHER LOCAL, THE POLICE DEPARTMENTS OR DEPARTMENTS WHERE THEY MAY HAVE A LARGER MINORITY, UH, MAKEUP, IF YOU WILL.
SO, BUT CAUSE I KNOW THE POLICE DEPARTMENT ONLY HIRES, THEY DON'T HIRE, UH, FRESH RECRUITS.
YEAH, THEY'RE DEFINITELY EXPERIENCED POLICE OFFICERS.
THAT'S WHAT, THAT'S WHAT HUBER HEIGHTS.
I MEAN, THAT'S WHAT THEIR, I GUESS THEIR POLICIES ARE.
THAT'S WHAT THEY DO IS GO OUT AND HIRE SEASONED, I GUESS, OFFICERS, IF YOU WILL.
UM, SO THAT WAS ONE OF THE OTHER THINGS WE TALKED ABOUT.
AND THEN I THINK LAST TIME WE TALKED ABOUT KIND OF ENSURING MINORITY REPRESENTATION THROUGH THE POLICE DEPARTMENT THROUGH MENTORING UP THROUGH THE RANKS, RIGHT.
SO, UM, SO THOSE ARE JUST SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WE KIND OF TALKED ABOUT AS IDEAS, UM, ON HOW, BECAUSE AGAIN, WHAT WE SEE RIGHT NOW IS, UM, YOU KNOW, BASED ON WHAT HE PROVIDED TO US AS COMPARED TO THE GENERAL ORDERS AND WHAT IT STATES THAT THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE DOING, IT SEEMS LIKE THE KIND OF FALLING SHORT OF, OF, OF, OF MEETING THOSE OBJECTIVES.
SO, UM, SO YEAH, SO WE, I REACHED OUT TO THE CHIEF, UH, WE'VE SET UP, UH, A MEETING WITH HIM ON THE 15TH OF NOVEMBER, UH, THE SIT DOWN AND THEN TALK ABOUT, YOU KNOW, WHAT CAN WE BASICALLY DO TO, UH, TO KIND OF ENHANCE OUR EFFORTS TO, TO, UM, TO BRING IN MORE DIVERSE, UH, POLICE FORCE.
AND I THINK RIGHT NOW I LOOKED AT THE DEMOGRAPHICS, I THINK THERE'S, THEY HAVE A ONE BLACK HAWK, ONE, I'M SORRY TO HAVE A ONE BLACK FEMALE OFFICER, ONE BLACK MALE OFFICER.
UM, ONE, I THINK AS HISPANIC, I CAN'T REMEMBER NOW WHEN HISPANIC OFFICER, UH, SO IT'S ABOUT, LET'S SAY IT'S 10%.
I THINK, SO IT'S 10% OF THE, OF THE WORKFORCES IS DIVERSE, RIGHT.
OR NONWHITE, IF YOU WILL, THIS IS WHAT THE MAKEUP IS.
UM, SO YEAH, SO AGAIN, SO WE'RE, WE'LL HAVE THAT CONVERSATION WITH HIM AND TO SEE WHERE THAT, WHERE THAT LEADS TO, UH, AND THEN BRIEFLY WE, WE TALKED A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE OTHER RECOMMENDATION THAT WE'VE PUT ON HOLD, WHICH HAS TO DO WITH, UH, MENTAL, MENTAL HEALTH IN TERMS OF,
[00:30:01]
UH, YOU KNOW, HAVING A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL ACCOMPANY, AN OFFICER DOING CERTAIN, CERTAIN STOCK OR CERTAIN, UM, IN CERTAIN SITUATIONS, IF YOU WILL.SO, UH, SO WE'RE GOING TO NEXT MEETING PROBABLY DECEMBER.
WE'LL TALK ABOUT SOME IDEAS, SOME, MAYBE SOME OTHER ALTERNATIVES POTENTIALLY THAT WE'D WANT TO PURSUE TO ADDRESS THE MENTAL HEALTH SITUATION.
UM, AND WITH THAT, I THINK THAT'S ALL I HAVE ANY QUESTIONS FOR ME OR MY TEAM THAT I'VE MISSED ANYTHING, CORRECT ME IF I SAID ANYTHING THAT WAS OUT OF LINE.
SO, SO ERIC, I HAVE A QUESTION AND I MAY HAVE MISUNDERSTOOD YOU, BUT DOES THE POLICE DEPARTMENT HAVE AN EXISTING DIVERSITY PLAN? DO THEY HAVE A PLAN ALREADY OR THAT NO SPECIFIC PLAN THAT, YOU KNOW, THAT SPEAKS TO DIVERSITY OTHER THAN I THINK THERE'S A STATEMENT THAT JUST SAYS I CAME OUT WITH THE STATEMENT THERE.
I THINK THERE'S JUST A STATEMENT THAT SAYS THAT THEY, UH, YOU KNOW, WHAT DOES IT SAY? I CAN'T REMEMBER.
MINORITIES ENCOURAGED TO APPLY.
SO IT SOUNDS LIKE YOUR KEY FOCAL AREAS WILL BE THE MENTAL HEALTH INCORPORATING MAT AND THEN ALSO THE MINORITY RECRUITMENT.
THOSE ARE THE TWO AREAS THAT WE'RE AT LEAST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT, YOU KNOW, WHETHER OR NOT WE'RE GOING TO MOVE FORWARD WITH SOME SORT OF RECOMMENDATION IN THOSE TWO.
AND WE STILL HAVE, UM, ON THE TABLE, A RECOMMENDATION FOR COUNCIL FOR REFORM THAT WILL BE TAKEN TO COUNCIL IN DECEMBER AND THE RECOMMENDATION WAS REGARDING, YEAH, THAT WAS THE, UM, WHAT WAS IT BASICALLY PUTTING TOGETHER THE, A GROUP THAT WOULD INVEST THAT WOULD BASICALLY, WHAT, WHAT DID I CALL IT? SO IT HAS TO DO WITH, YOU KNOW, IN A, IN A SITUATION WHERE A, UM, WHERE A CITIZEN IS SATISFIED WITH, UH, LET'S SAY A COMPLAINT THAT THEY SUBMITTED.
AND LET'S JUST SAY, THEY'RE NOT SATISFIED WITH HOW, HOW IT WAS ADJUDICATED.
THEY WOULD BASICALLY BE ABLE TO COME TO THIS COMMITTEE AND WE COULD, I THINK IT WAS CITIZEN REVIEW BOARD, I THINK, UM, IT'S KIND OF SIMILAR TO WHAT THE DAYTON POLICE DEPARTMENT, I GUESS, INSTITUTED OR DAYTON CITY INSTITUTED, BUT SOMETHING SIMILAR TO THAT.
BUT ESSENTIALLY THAT'S, THAT'S THE RECOMMENDATION THAT WE HAVE A ORGANIZATION PUT TOGETHER, THE CITIZENS COMPLAINTS.
UM, I JUST WANTED TO UPDATE EVERYONE ON THAT THAT WAS SENT TO CITY COUNCIL.
THAT RECOMMENDATION WAS MADE I BELIEVE TWO MONTHS AGO, I BELIEVE.
SO THAT WAS SENT AND THEY TABLED IT FOR A MEETING, WHICH WE DISCUSSED LAST MONTH AND IT WILL BE ON THEIR AGENDA FOR DECEMBER, THAT RECOMMENDATION TO REVIEW.
REFORM VERY MUCH FOR YOUR WORK AND OUTREACH.
WELL, OUTREACH COMMITTEE, HADN'T BEEN REALLY DOING ANYTHING.
WE HAD A MEETING ON A TUESDAY, OCTOBER 26TH.
UH, THERE WERE FOUR MAJOR EVENTS THAT WE DISCUSSED THE FIRST OF WHICH AN AISLE DUTIES IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER.
THE FIRST WAS, UM, A HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST THAT WE, UH, THAT WE GOT THE INFORMATION OUT FOR.
OF COURSE, ALL OF THE MEMBERS HERE HAVE SEEN IT.
UM, THE TOPIC IS, UH, WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO HONOR THE HISTORY OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES IN AMERICAN? WHAT CAN NON-NATIVES DO TO FURTHER THE RESTORATION OF INDIGENOUS LIFE AND CULTURE? AND THAT IS A, UM, IT'S A HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY FOR TWO CATEGORIES, NINTH AND 10TH GRADE, AND THEN 11TH AND 12TH GRADE.
UH, SO THERE'LL BE COMPETING FOR, UH, LET ME GET THIS NUMBER, RIGHT.
I THINK IT'S A $300 FIRST PRIZE, $200, SECOND PRIZE.
AND THE, UH, THE TEACHER'S NAME WHO WAS MENTIONED ON THE APPLICATION OF THE WINNING, UH, WINNING STUDENT, EACH CATEGORY WILL WIN $50.
AND THAT THE REASON WE DID THAT WAS TO KIND OF STIMULATE SOME, SOME, UH, SOME ESSAYS, THE LAST CONTEST THAT WE DID, AND I WAS KINDA DISAPPOINTED BY THE RESPONSE.
UM, AND I THINK, UM, IF GETTING THE TEACHERS INVOLVED IN, IN, IN, IN KIND OF DRUMMING UP THE STUDENTS TO GET THEM ENGAGED, I THINK THAT THAT'S GOING TO HELP US TREMENDOUSLY AS FAR AS THE, THE NUMBER, AS WELL AS THE QUALITY OF, UH, OF, UM, ESSAYS THAT WE GET.
SO THE COMMITTEE CAME UP WITH THAT AND, UM, WE ARE, WE SENT THIS OUT TO QUITE A LARGE NUMBER OF FOLKS IN THE, IN THE HUMOROUS CITY SCHOOL DISTRICT.
[00:35:01]
UP ON THAT AGAIN TOMORROW.IT SEEMS LIKE FOR WHATEVER REASON, FRIDAY'S THE BEST DAY TO ENGAGE WITH THEM OR EITHER MONDAY, BUT, YOU KNOW, I'LL SEND THAT OUT TOMORROW AGAIN AND, UH, JUST TO MAKE SURE AND TO MAKE A CORRECTION.
MY EMAIL ADDRESS WAS THERE WAS A DIGIT OFF THERE THAT AS BCG OR SBG C GLOBAL, THERE'S AN EXTRA GNL ON THE APPLICATION.
SO I'M SURPRISED JEAN DIDN'T CATCH THAT, BUT I HAVE A, I'M GOING TO SEND THAT OUT AGAIN TOMORROW.
SO WE'LL, WE'LL SEND THAT OUT AGAIN.
UM, NEEDLESS TO SAY, WE HAVE, I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY PROBABLY CAUSE THEY GOT THE WRONG EMAIL ADDRESS, BUT, UM, I'LL SEND THAT OUT TO A MADHOUSE AND SOME OF THE FOLKS AT, UH, AT THE SCHOOL DISTRICT LATER, UM, PROBABLY TONIGHT ACTUALLY.
UM, SO THAT'S WHERE IN FULL SWING FOR DOING THAT AND ALL OF THAT.
SO NUMBER TWO, THE, A MARTIN LUTHER KING CELEBRATION AND UNITY WALK JANUARY 17TH.
SO PLEASE PUT THAT ON YOUR CALENDARS.
AND, UM, ALL OF THE PREPARATIONS HAVE BEEN MADE FOR THAT.
THE COMMITTEE IS WORKING HARD TO, TO, UH, DO A COUPLE OF THINGS.
NUMBER ONE, UH, LEARN FROM LAST YEAR, LET'S GIVE THEM A SPECIFIC PLACE TO PUT UP A PODIUM IF WE'RE GOING TO DO ACTUALLY WE WERE MOVING IT.
SO WE'LL BE NORTH OF TOWN THIS TIME INSTEAD OF SOUTH.
SO WE DECIDED TO DO NORTH OF TOWN NEXT YEAR, AND THEN THE YEAR AFTER WE'LL DO SOUTH OF TOWN, AGAIN, IT JUST KIND OF ALTERNATE AND GO BACK AND FORTH SO WE CAN, UM, SPREAD THE LOVE THAT IS, LET ME GET THIS RIGHT.
AND I THINK WE DISCUSSED STARTING AT THE DICK'S SPORTING GOODS THERE AND THEN GO OUT TO OLD TROY AND UP TO SHELTER, NEW SEASONS, BUT WE'RE STILL WORKING OUT THE DETAILS AND MAKING SURE IT'S OKAY WITH WHAT'S THAT IT'S 0.8 MILES.
AND WE'LL MAKE SURE COUNCIL WOMAN BAKERS IN THE FRONT.
MY, SO JANUARY 17TH, PUT THAT ON YOUR CALENDARS AND WE'LL SEND OUT THE INFORMATION FOR THAT AND YOU'LL SEE IT ON OUR KEY ADS POSTS AND ALL THAT, AND MAKE SURE EVERYBODY'S WELL-INFORMED AND KNOW THAT THAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN AND GET THE POLICE INVOLVED TO MAKE SURE EVERYBODY'S SAFE AND NOT GETTING HIT BY CARS AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
UH, THEN WE HAVE JUNE THE JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION, UH, FATHER'S DAY FUNK FESTIVAL, UH, GOING THROUGH SOME STUFF WITH BRIAN AND YOU MAY HAVE SEEN THE EMAIL THREAD THERE, UH, TRYING TO GET THE FOLKS FROM M I M E THE MANAGEMENT COMPANY FOR THE ROSE TO SECURE THAT ACTS THAT IN THIS GENRE THAT WE WANT TO, TO HAVE TO BRING THEM TO, TO GET THE ROSE MUSIC CENTER, IF THAT'S WHAT IT'S CALLED, UM, AS A SECOND OPTION AND FAR LESS FAVORABLE FOR ME IS GOING TO BE THE EICHELBERGER.
IF THAT HAPPENS, I WOULD MUCH RATHER IF WE CAN GET THE ACT CONTRACTED IN THAT SORT OF THING BY THE FOLKS AT THE ROSE, THE BILL, AGAIN, THAT GENRE, AND THEY'RE LOOKING FOR A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT PEOPLE AND IT'S A PRETTY INVOLVED PROCESS.
I WAS HOPING BRIAN WAS GOING TO BE HERE TONIGHT TO EXPLAIN IT TO EVERYONE.
BUT BASICALLY THE CITY KIND OF HELPS WITH, WITH CONTRACTING AND, UM, M I M E A, THEY CONTRACT FOLKS THAT ARE ON THEIR WAY.
IT SEEMS LIKE ON THEIR WAY TO SOMEWHERE ELSE, IT CAN STOP YOU AND YOUR BRIDES AND THEN, YOU KNOW, DO THE HOST.
BUT, UH, I MEAN, HONESTLY, THAT'S, THAT'S REALLY WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE, UM, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE JOHN LEGEND CONCERT.
AND I'M LIKE, HOW DO WE AFFORD JOHN LEGEND? BUT HE EXPLAINED IT.
UH, AND I WAS LIKE, OKAY, THAT WORKS TO HIM.
UM, HE'S IN TOWN ANYWAYS AND HAVING STUFF GOING ON WITH HIS FAMILY.
SO THEY BOOK THEM AND, YOU KNOW, PICK UP A COUPLE OF HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS ON YOUR WAY.
UH, THE FATHER'S DAY, JUNE FATHER'S DAY FUNK FESTIVAL, UH, JUNE 19TH, THAT IS GOING TO BE THE DATE.
AND WE ARE STILL WORKING ON THE DETAILS FOR THAT TO, UH, TO BOOK IN THE WEEK.
THE CULTURE FESTIVAL IS SLATED FOR SATURDAY, AND THAT IS, LET ME GET THIS DATE, RIGHT.
CAUSE THAT'S WHAT HAPPENED BUTCHERING UP THIS DAY FOREVER, JUNE 25TH, 2022.
AND THAT EVENT IS GOING TO BE FROM 12:00 PM TO 6:00 PM.
AND WE ARE, UM, WORKING DILIGENTLY ON, UH, GETTING, UH, PARTICIPANTS AND FOOD VENDORS AND ALL OF THAT KIND OF STUFF FOR THE, UH, FOR THE CULTURE FESTIVAL.
AND HONESTLY, I THINK WE'RE GOING TO HAVE, HOPEFULLY THIS COVID THING WILL BE DONE BY THEN, AND WE'LL HAVE EVERYBODY OUT THERE AND HAVE A WONDERFUL TIME.
WELL, THE BEARS UP IN THE AIR, SO IT MIGHT BE OKAY, SO THE WORLD AFFAIR LET'S
[00:40:02]
OKAY.UH
SO YEAH, WE'RE LOOKING TO HAVE A BUNCH OF PEOPLE IN THERE.
A BUNCH OF ACTS, A BUNCH OF BOOSTS AND, AND LET'S HAVE A BUNCH OF FUN.
UH, LIKE, UH, JEAN WAS SAYING EARLIER, WE ARE GOING TO NEED SOME HELP DURING THAT WEEK.
WE ARE, UH, AS SOON AS THE NEW YEAR HIT, WE'LL HIT THAT AT THAT PRETTY HARD AS FAR AS GETTING VOLUNTEERS FROM OTHER COMMISSIONS TO HELP US OUT WITH THE, WITH THE, UM, WITH CULTURE WEEK THAT STARTING AGAIN WITH THAT CONCERT AND ENDING WITH THE CULTURE FESTIVAL.
UM, AND WE WANT TO ADD THAT, UH, THAT, THAT ONE RACISM AS A PUBLIC HEALTH CRISIS AND IT, ON ONE OF THOSE DAYS, WE'LL FIGURE OUT WHICH DAY THAT'S GOING TO BE.
UM, I'LL I PERSONALLY WOULD LIKE TO SEE, AND THIS IS MY OWN LITTLE THING, UH, A SESSION ON FINANCIAL LITERACY, I THINK WE COULD DO WELL.
AND YOU PROVIDE SOME TEACHING FOLKS ABOUT CREDIT AND BUYING HOMES AND YOUR RIGHTS.
UH, I MEAN, IF YOU'RE GOING TO BUY A HOUSE, WHAT BETTER WAY TO GET STARTED THAN WHAT THEY, UM, WITH, UH, WITH A SEMINAR ON WHAT YOU NEED TO DO TO FIX YOUR CREDIT.
THAT'S AT LEAST THAT'S, THAT'S JUST ME, BUT WE'LL TALK ABOUT THAT IN OUR COMMITTEE MEETING.
I GUESS I HAVE A COUPLE OF QUESTIONS.
SO THE ACT FOR THE ROWS, I MEAN, DETERMINING IF WE'RE ABLE TO GO THAT ROUTE, UM, THE TIMELINE FOR THAT, WHEN WOULD WE KNOW? SO ANYBODY HERE THAT KNOWS A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THAT PROCESS THAN I DO, THIS IS NICELY HELPED ME OUT A LITTLE BIT.
UM, SO IF MMI, THEY, A LOT OF TIMES WHEN THEY BOOK SHOWS, WE MAY NOT KNOW UNTIL APRIL, SO IT MAY NOT BE UNTIL LIKE TWO MONTHS BEFORE YOU WANT TO HAVE, THAT'S WHY WE WENT AHEAD AND HAD THE EICHELBERGER RESERVED IN THE EVENT.
THERE'S NOTHING THAT HAPPENS FOR THAT CONCERT ON THE 19TH, SO, OKAY.
SO YEAH, IT COULD BE, IT COULD BE LAST MINUTE.
AND, AND, AND THE KEY TO THAT IS, AGAIN, HAVING FOLKS THAT, THAT ARE, YOU KNOW, EITHER HAVING EVENTS SOMEWHERE AND ON THEIR WAY TO SOMEWHERE ELSE AND OR EITHER KNOWING SOMEBODY AND I, YOU KNOW, I'VE MADE SOME SUGGESTIONS TO BRIAN TO CONTACT SOME FOLKS, UM, AT THE, UH, THE FUNKY MUSEUM DOWNTOWN, UM, AND GAVE HIM SOME OF THOSE CONTACTS.
I'LL HOPEFULLY HE CAN FORWARD THAT TO THE FOLKS AT EMI EMI AT THE ROSEN, AND WE'LL JUST TRY TO PUSH AS THEY PULL.
SO, I MEAN, YOU KNOW, IT'S, IT'S, THE, THE ACTS ARE GENERALLY CONTRACTED FROM OCTOBER UNTIL APRIL, AND THEN THEY HAVE THE WHOLE, THE REST OF THE SEASON DONE AND FINALIZED BY APRIL.
SO WE, WE MAY NOT KNOW UNTIL LATER, UH, WHAT ACTS ARE AVAILABLE.
AND I GAVE HIM SOME NAMES JUST IN CASE HE WAS NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE GENRE, YOU KNOW, LAKESIDE SLAVE, NO OHIO PLAYERS CAMEO THOSE KINDS OF GROUPS.
THAT'S WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR.
UM, HONESTLY I THINK THOSE FOLKS WOULD, WOULD FILL UP THE ROWS AND, AND LET'S NOT GET IT TWISTED, RIGHT? M E M I IS THERE TO MAKE MONEY AND THEY WANT TO BOOK GROUPS THAT ARE GOING TO FILL UP THE ROLES.
AND THAT'S REALLY THE PURPOSE OF IT.
THEY'RE NOT THERE FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE, ANY OF THAT STUFF.
SO IF WE COULD, IF THEY COULD GET AN ACT THAT A FILL IT UP OR TWO ACTS THAT CAN FILL IT UP OR WHATEVER THE CASE MAY BE.
AND I MEAN, YOU GOTTA PAY FOR IT.
THEY'RE LOOKING AT MAKING WHAT, I THINK YOU SAID 4.5 MILLION ON A CONCERT.
AND IT, IT HAS TO, IT HAS, THEY HAVE TO MAKE THEIR MONEY.
SO HONESTLY, I THINK IF WE CAN GET LATE SIDE OR HIGH PLAYERS, OR, YOU KNOW, MAYBE BRING EDDIE LAVERT IN, THEY CAN MAKE THEIR MONEY AND WE CAN HAVE SOME FUN DOING IT.
SO THE ONLY THE CHALLENGE BECOMES THE TIMELINE.
SO THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TO THINK ABOUT, UM, BECAUSE I HATE TO LOOK AT ONE PLACE AND THEN WE HAVE TO REVAMP IT, DO A CHANGE OF VENUES.
SO I THINK WE NEED TO SET A DEADLINE FOR OURSELVES IN TERMS OF GO NO-GO YOU AREN'T GETTING TIME.
WELL, WE HAVE TO MARKET IT, WHICH MEANS THAT WE NEED THE VENUE WELL, AHEAD OF TIME, I'M BEING FACETIOUS.
BUT IF WE KNOW WHAT THEY WERE GOING TO DO THAT CONCERT, AND WE KNOW WE WANT TO DO IT ON THE 19TH, RIGHT.
THAT, THAT SOLVES PART OF THAT PROBLEM.
WE KNOW THAT IF IT'S NOT GOING TO BE A, IT'LL BE B, RIGHT.
SO IF THEY CANNOT FIND, OR, OR CONTRACT AN ACT, THAT'S GOING TO BE LARGE ENOUGH
[00:45:01]
TO, FOR THE ROWS TO MAKE THEIR MONEY.THEN WE KNOW WE'RE GOING TO BE AT THE ICO BURNER SILENT.
THAT'S, THERE'S A CONTINGENCY THERE, AND WE'VE ALREADY PUT THAT CONTINGENCY IN PLACE JUST IN CASE IT DOES NOT HAPPEN.
AND HOPEFULLY, AND I WILL GET A CALL FROM BRIAN AND MONSON, HEY, GUESS WHAT? NOT LIKELY, BUT, SO WHEN WE COMMUNICATE WITH THE VENDORS AND THINGS, WHAT ARE WE PUTTING OUT THERE TO THEM, THE FABULOUS FOR THE CULTURE FESTIVAL FOR THE RIGHT.
I'M PROBABLY THINKING TWO DIFFERENT THINGS.
I'M THINKING ABOUT THE CULTURE FEST.
SO THERE'S NO, THERE'S NOT GOING TO BE ANY, IT'S JUST GOING TO BE THE CONCERT.
THERE'S NO VENDORS OR ANYTHING AT THE CONCERT.
NO, I MEAN, YEAH, THEY, THEY DO ALL THAT.
THEY HAVE THEIR OWN CONCESSION STANDS.
I MEAN, WE WOULDN'T BE AT, WITH WANTING TO DO IT.
I'M GONNA LET YOU JUST WANT TO HELP SWEEP UP AFTERWARDS.
I MEAN, LOOKING FOR SOME WORK.
I THINK THAT WAS ALL THAT I HAD.
SO I THINK THE BIGGEST THING FOR US WITH OUTREACH AND ALSO WELL WITH ALL OF THE COMMITTEES IS TO GET A VOLUNTEER BASE UP.
AND I KNOW WE'VE MENTIONED THAT, YOU KNOW, A FEW TIMES, UM, SO I THINK WE'LL KIND OF PUT TOGETHER LIKE AN AD HOC COMMITTEE TO START LOOKING AT HOW WE CAN PULL VOLUNTEERS FROM OUR COMMUNITY.
SO ANYONE INTERESTED WE'LL WORK ON THAT IS ANYONE INTERESTED IN WORKING WITH ME ON THAT? OKAY.
AND PUT MY WIFE ON THAT COMMITTEE.
SHE ALWAYS BOTHERING ME SO LOVE TO HELP.
AND I THINK ANY EVENTS THAT WE HAVE, IF WE CAN JUST BE VERY CREATIVE ABOUT HOW WE CAN GET VOLUNTEERS FROM EVERY EVENT THAT WE HAVE.
SO ELECTRONIC SYSTEM WHERE THEY CAN SIGN UP
CAN WE DO LIKE SOLICIT VOLUNTEERS ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE? AND WE CAN PROBABLY DO THAT IN THE NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS.
HEY, GUESS WHAT WE NEED SMELL OKAY.
I THINK THAT WAS ALL THE QUESTIONS I HAD.
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR COMMITTEE REPORTS.
SO UNDER OLD BUSINESS, WE HAVE THE PROCLAMATION FOR LUCILLE DALE, UM, AND THAT HAS BEEN APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL.
SO THEY WILL LET US KNOW THE SPECIFIC DATE AND WHICH THAT WILL BE PRESENTED TO MS. DALE.
THEY'RE ACTUALLY WORKING WITH HER TO FIGURE OUT A DATE THAT WORKS FOR HER TO BE PRESENTED A PROCLAMATION.
UM, THE COUNCIL RECOMMENDATIONS, I ALREADY MENTIONED THAT WE HAVE TWO THAT WERE ON THE TABLE, ACTUALLY THREE, UM, BUT ONE HAS ALREADY BEEN TAKEN CARE OF.
THAT WAS THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY.
WE ALSO HAVE THE REFORM, UM, THE CITIZENS REVIEW BOARD RECOMMENDATION, AND THEN WE SUBMITTED TO COUNCIL ABOUT STARTING A BLACK BUSINESS OF THE QUARTER, WHICH WAS NOT NECESSARILY A RECOMMENDATION, BUT WAS INSTEAD INFORMATIONAL.
SO THOSE ARE THREE THINGS THAT, UM, ARE STILL WITH CITY COUNCIL.
UM, WE STILL HAVE A COUPLE OTHER THINGS.
OF COURSE, THEY'RE WORKING ON THE WEBSITE, WHICH WAS A RECOMMENDATION WE HAD LAST YEAR AT THE BEGINNING OF THE YEAR.
UM, AGAIN, JUST A REMINDER, IF THERE ARE THINGS THAT YOU WANT SPECIFIC FOR YOUR COMMITTEE ON THE WEBSITE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW THAT SO THAT WE CAN COMMUNICATE THAT AND GET THAT PUT ON YOUR WEBPAGE ON OUR WEBPAGE, WHEN THE SPECIFIC INDIVIDUAL PAGE FOR YOUR COMMITTEE, IS IT POSSIBLE TO LIKE VIDEOS? LIKE, CAN WE LIKE DOWNSTREAM?
[00:50:04]
THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING.IF WE, IF THIS ISN'T DOWNLOADABLE, THEN YEAH.
WE'D HAVE TO RESEARCH THAT, BUT I'LL ASK ONE OF THEM AND YOU SHOULD FIGURE IT OUT SO WE CAN BE ABLE TO DOWNLOAD.
IF IT'S DOWNLOADABLE, UM, IF NOT, THERE SHOULD BE A LINK, LIKE COULD LINK IT, LINK TO IT.
UM, SO THAT IS JUST SOMETHING TO REMEMBER, ESPECIALLY AS WE APPROACH 20, 22, WHICH IS COMING VERY FAST, WE ARE, UM, A YEAR IN Y'ALL A YEAR IN AND WE'VE WORKED VERY HARD, VERY DILIGENTLY.
I'M VERY PROUD, VERY PROUD OF THIS COMMISSION AND THE WORK THAT EVERYONE IS PUTTING IN.
UM, SO REMEMBER THAT FOR 2022, JUST KEEP ON YOUR RADAR, UM, OPPORTUNITIES TO PULL OTHERS IN THE VOLUNTEERS, THE PEOPLE THAT JUST COME TO THE MEETINGS, JUST TO HEAR WHAT'S GOING ON.
UM, KEEP THOSE THINGS ON YOUR RADAR FOR ITEMS C 2022 PROGRAMS PROJECTS.
I HEARD A LOT OF STUFF TODAY FOR 2022.
IS THERE ANYTHING THAT WE MIGHT'VE MISSED DURING OUR COMMITTEE MEETINGS THAT WE HAVE ON THE RADAR FOR 2022? I THINK THE ONE THING WE JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT WE'RE CREATING THOSE SPECIFIC DAYS, LIKE BLACK HISTORY MONTH, BLACK HISTORY MONTH, NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH, UM, HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH.
WE WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT, YOU KNOW, EVEN IF WE'RE NOT DOING EVENTS OR EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS OR WHATEVER, THAT WE'RE USING OUR WEBSITE TO HIGHLIGHT THOSE SPECIFIC MONTHS THAT GO ON THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, WE ARE ALL ADMIN FOR THE EDITOR FOR OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.
SO YOU CAN MAKE A POST SILLY KIND OF PUT OUT LIKE THE NATIVE AMERICAN HERITAGE, UM, BUT THINGS LIKE THAT.
SO IF YOU COME ACROSS A POSTING INTO YOUR LIFE, YOU DO, OR YOU FIND THAT TOPIC THAT HAS TO DEAL WITH THINGS THAT WE ALL CALL APRIL TO MAKE THOSE EVENTS.
UH, A AND B HAS BEEN PROMOTING
UM, AND THEN I KNOW THERE'S A VETERANS MEMORIAL SATURDAY.
SO IF YOU KNOW, I KNOW I'M GOING TO TRY TO SUPPORT HIM.
IF WE'RE ABLE TO SUPPORT THAT WOULD BE GOOD.
LIKE NOVEMBER, I PUT THOSE TWO ON OUR ART PAGE.
YOU CAN LOOK AT OUR FACEBOOK PAGE AS THE BIKE PARKS, SOFT OPENING, WHICH I THINK IS NOVEMBER.
UM, AND THEN, UM, BUT IT'S ON OUR, IT'S ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE.
SO I SHARED IT EARLIER BEFORE I LEFT THE OFFICE.
SO YOU CAN SEE THE DATES AND THE BEDROOMS IS ALL THERE AS WELL.
DO WE HAVE A CITY DOWNLOADABLE CALENDAR? IS THERE ONE KATY ON THE CITY?
SO I COULD KEEP TRACK, PULL IT INTO OUR CALENDARS AND KNOW WHERE WE'RE SUPPOSED TO BE WITH ALL THE EVENTS.
CAUSE ONE THING WE HAVE TO REALIZE, I THINK THIS WAS MENTIONED BY ONE OF THE ATTENDEES THAT CAME TO THE FORUM IN OCTOBER.
NOT EVERYBODY HAS ACCESS TO FACEBOOK, SO WE HAVE TO KEEP THAT IN MIND TO HAVE OTHER SOURCES OF WHERE WE CAN
[00:55:01]
PUBLICIZE OUR EVENTS, ACTIVITIES.SO WE HAVE TO THINK ABOUT THAT.
MS. BAKER, LIKE GET YOUR CALENDAR AND MAKE SURE WE GET THE NEWSLETTERS
UM, CAN I ASK A QUICK QUESTION ABOUT LIKE 2022 OR KIND OF STUFF LEFT OVER FROM 2021? DID THE NEEDS ASSESSMENT DIE IN THE WATER OR WHERE DID THAT COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT PIECE GO? BECAUSE IT WAS APPROVED AND IT WAS KICKED BACK AND THEN IT WENT AWAY FOR LIKE THE LAST SIX MONTHS.
NEEDS ASSESSMENT AND CULTURAL PLAN DIVERSITY PLAN.
AND DID YOU HAVE SOMETHING? OKAY.
I DO, WE DO HAVE A COMMISSIONS SEAT OPENING JANUARY.
UM, MR. RAMIREZ WILL NOT BE ATTORNEY WITH US.
WE'RE GOING TO MISS YOU SO MUCH.
YOU HAVE BEEN AWESOME AND YOU HAVE KEPT THINGS IN ORDER PROCEDURALLY PROCESS ORIENTED.
I'LL BE IN THE SEATS WITH THE REST OF THE CITIZENS.
AND THANK YOU FOR, UM, FOR SERVING ON THE COMMISSION AND FOR ALL OF THE WORK THAT YOU PUT IN.
UM, SO THAT SEAT WILL BE OPEN BEGINNING.
WELL, JANUARY THE NEW PERSON WILL START.
IT IS POSTED ON THE CITY WEBSITE AND IT WILL BE, YOU CAN SUBMIT FOR THAT.
IF YOU KNOW OF ANYONE WHO'S INTERESTED, THEY CAN SUBMIT AN APPLICATION UP THROUGH NOVEMBER THE 26TH AND THEN THE INTERVIEW PROCESS WILL BEGIN AFTER THAT.
AND I DID FIND OUT FROM TONY THAT REMIND ME, KATIE.
YOU GO OVER THAT FOR ME PLEASE.
SO THERE IS A PROCESS COUNCIL HAS PUT TOGETHER A GROUP OF PEOPLE THAT WILL INTERVIEW.
THEY INTERVIEWED BOARDS AND COMMISSION MEMBER APPLICANTS.
UM, IT'S UM, SOME REPRESENTATIVE FROM THE CLERK'S OFFICE REPRESENTATIVE FROM HR OFFICE.
TYPICALLY THEY INVITE THE CHAIR OF THE COMMITTEE OR THE COMMISSIONER BOARD TO COME.
UM, AND SOMETIMES IF THERE'S A LIAISON FROM COUNCIL, THE COUNCIL WILL GO AND THE LIAISON FROM THE BOARD WILL GO.
AND THEN THAT GROUP WILL INTERVIEW EACH APPLICANT AND THOSE APPLICANTS, THEY REVIEW THEM AFTER THE INTERVIEW, THEN THEY DETERMINE THEY MAKE A RECOMMENDATION TO COUNCIL AND THEN COUNCIL WILL APPOINT.
SO THAT RECOMMENDATION WOULD PROBABLY BE PUT ON WHAT THE LAST
WHEN DOES, WHEN DOES HE TYPICALLY, SO HE TYPICALLY DOES IT AS SOON AS THE INTERVIEWS ARE DONE.
SO IF WE GET APPLICATIONS AND SAY, WE INTERVIEW THE CLOSEST TO 26, NOVEMBER 26TH, UM, FIRST MEETING WOULD BE IF THEY SCHEDULE INTERVIEWS QUICK ENOUGH, IT COULD MEET ON THE 13TH OF DECEMBER, BUT IF NOT, MAYBE THE 27TH OF DECEMBER.
SO IT'D BE PRETTY CLOSE TO THE TIMELINE.
AND YOU SEE THE APPLICANTS, THE LIST APPLICANTS THAT APPLY.
I'M SURE HE WOULD SEND THEM OUT, BUT THE, BUT THE GROUP THAT ACTUALLY INTERVIEWS THEM WILL BE THE ONES THAT ARE INTERVIEWING PUBLIC RECORD.
SO WILL THESE APPLICANTS BE ASKED THE SAME QUESTIONS THAT I WOULD HOPE THAT WE WERE ALL ASKED? HE HAS A SET OF QUESTIONS THAT HE ASKS EVERY, EVERY BOARD AND COMMISSION APPLICANTS.
SO THE QUESTION WAS HE, I'M SORRY, TOMMY.
[01:00:01]
SO I, I THINK MY CONCERN AND I MIGHT AS WELL GO AHEAD AND ADDRESS IT.UM, OUR COMMISSION IS DIFFERENT.
WE'RE DEALING WITH SOME DIFFERENT INITIATIVES AND ISSUES.
MY CONCERN IS THAT ANYONE THAT WOULD JOIN OUR COMMISSION WOULD NEED TO BE PASSIONATE ABOUT THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING AND NOT JUST LOOKING TO OCCUPY A SEAT.
SO MY HOPE WOULD BE THAT WE WOULD HAVE SOME INPUT OVER THE QUESTIONS BECAUSE EVERYBODY IS NOT GOING TO BE BESTED AT THE LEVEL THAT WE ARE.
AND THERE AREN'T PEOPLE WE'VE ADDRESSED THIS BEFORE.
THAT JUST WANT A SEAT TO PUT A TICK ON A RESUME.
THIS COMMISSION REQUIRES SOMEONE THAT IS WILLING TO BE DEVOTED, NOT JUST TO MEETINGS, BUT TO THINGS THAT WE'RE DOING IN THE COMMUNITY.
SO THAT'S, THAT NEEDS TO BE COMMUNICATED.
AND I DON'T HAVE A PROBLEM COMMUNICATING IT.
AND I KNOW SOMEBODY KNOWS THIS, WE'VE HAD THIS CONVERSATION, BUT WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOMEONE THAT'S GOING TO HELP US CONTINUE THE WORK THAT WE'RE DOING.
AND NOT JUST SOMEONE THAT WANTS TO SHOW UP ONCE A MONTH TO A MEETING.
I GUESS MY QUESTION IS, YOU KNOW, WHY? CAUSE I THINK WHEN WE FORMED THE INITIAL MEDIA RIGHTS OR THAT WERE DISAPPOINTED THAT WE DID INTERVIEWS FOR THE REMAINING FIVE, RIGHT.
WITHOUT A LIST OF WHAT, 20 POSTED 30 SOMETHING APPLICANTS.
SO WHAT WE DID LAST TIME, RIGHT? SO THE FOUR APPOINTED MEMBERS AT LEAST DID AN INITIAL SCRUB.
AND ACTUALLY INTERVIEWED, I GUESS, TO SOME DEGREE, THOSE CANDIDATES.
AND THEN WE KIND OF PROVIDE A RECOMMENDATION RIGHT.
AND THEN I MAKE THE CITY WENT FORWARD THEN WITH THE, DOING THE INTERVIEW.
I THOUGHT IF I REMEMBER, RIGHT, RIGHT.
SO WHY WOULDN'T WE DO, UH, WHY WOULDN'T WE EXECUTE A SIMILAR PROCESS IN THIS CASE? I DIDN'T HAVE TO SAY JUST ONE INDIVIDUAL.
BUT WHY WOULDN'T WE AT LEAST DO SOMETHING SIMILAR TO WHAT WE DID BEFORE THE PROCESS HAS ALREADY SET, BUT THE BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS.
SO THAT'S THE PROCESS THEY USE AND THIS COMMISSION REALLY ISN'T ANY DIFFERENT THAN ANY OTHER COMMISSION WHEN IT COMES TO HOW THAT PROCESS WORKS.
SO, AND THE CHAIR IS INVITED AND IT'S YOUR CAN COME MEETING THE VICE OR A MEMBER OF THIS COMMISSION OBVIOUSLY WOULD BE THERE.
YOU KNOW, THEY WOULD HAVE TIME TO BE THERE.
SO THEY WERE, THERE WOULD BE A SAFE FROM THE COMMISSION, BUT THE COMMISSION AS A WHOLE, IT WOULDN'T BE THE WHOLE CONDITION.
I JUST SNUGLY SET PRECEDENT WHAT WE DID BEFORE.
SO I'M JUST WONDERING WHAT CHANGED, BUT OKAY.
I'VE BEEN ON THE BOARD SINCE 1996 AND THIS IS A CONSISTENT PROCESS.
IT'S NOT JUST WHAT THE BOARD IS A PROCESS WHERE INDIVIDUALS SUBMIT APPLICATION TO BE ON ANY OF THE BOARDS.
AND THEN ONCE THEY ON THE BOARD SIT, UH, MEMBERS OF THE CITY COUNCIL INTERVIEW, IT MIGHT BE ONE OR TWO.
IT WAS OFF THE PARADIGM AND WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS TRYING TO GET UP EARLY.
YOU KNOW, ME, UH, AND I'LL AGREE WITH ALL THE COMMISSIONERS, BUT THIS WAS SOMETHING THEY WAS TRYING TO GET, BUT THERE IS A PROCESS AND THAT PROCESS OF SELECTING INDIVIDUALS TO BE ON ALL THE BOARDS, THIS, TO START A PROCESS, YOU KNOW, IT'S NO DIFFERENT WITH YOU ALL BECAUSE IT WAS UP, THEY WANTED TO GET IT STARTED.
SO NOW THIS YEAR YOU ALL HAVE BEEN A YEAR.
SO NOW YOU ALL CAN GO, SO IT COULD BE CONSISTENT.
SO IT'S A CONSISTENT PROCESS WITH THE CITY.
THEY TRY, THEY TRY THIS LINE OF SCHOOL.
I MEAN, YOU KNOW, AND I, AND I WILL TELL YOU, YOU KNOW, TONY HAS HIS QUESTIONS AND, AND THE LIAISON HAS A QUESTION AND THE CHAIR CAN QUESTION.
AND IT IS ONE OF THOSE WITH EVERY BOARD.
IT, IT IS, UH, IT IS, UM, IT'S TIME AND COMMITMENT.
SO THAT IS SOMETHING THAT ISN'T, IT'S LIKE, IF YOU HAVE TIME, IT'S NOT JUST TO COME TO A MEETING, IT'S FOR EVENTS, IT'S FOR THESE ALSO THEY GO INTO A BACKGROUND CHECK ALL OF THAT TO INTERVIEW.
SO MY QUESTION IS ON THE QUESTIONS, BECAUSE I UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS IN TERMS OF THE INTERVIEW.
UM, AND TONY DID SHARE THAT WITH ME, THAT, THAT THAT'S, WHAT'S WRITTEN IN OUR HANDBOOK.
SO THAT'S WHAT WE WANT TO BE CONSISTENT.
UM, BUT I WILL REPRESENT THE COMMISSION AS PART OF THE PROCESS, BUT ARE THE QUESTION, DO THE QUESTIONS HAVE TO BE CONSISTENT ACROSS BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS AS WELL, BECAUSE I DIDN'T READ ANYTHING ABOUT THAT.
IT IS NICE TO KEEP THEM CONSISTENT BECAUSE IT COULD BE SOMEBODY APPLYING FOR THIS BOARD, RIGHT.
[01:05:01]
THIS COMMISSION, AND THEN WE HAVE AN OPENING, ANOTHER COMMISSION.SO WE MAY PICK THAT GROUP MAY SELECT, WELL, THIS PERSON PROBABLY WOULD FIT BETTER HERE.
SO YOU ARE ASKING THE SAME QUESTIONS AND IT'S THE SAME COMMITMENT QUESTIONS, AND WHAT CAN YOU BRING TO THE TABLE AND THOSE TYPES OF THINGS.
SO IT IS IT, YES, THEY ARE ASKED THE SAME QUESTION TO EVERY BOARD TO KEEP THAT CONSISTENCY.
SO IS THAT SOMETHING THAT'S STANDARDIZED TOO? THAT WE, BECAUSE WE DID, WE DID ACTUALLY COME UP WITH QUESTIONS FOR THE INITIAL PROCESS AND MS. NEWBY IS CORRECT.
THIS WAS A NEW, A NEW, COMPLETE NEW COMMISSION, A NEW BOARD TO TRY AND GET PEOPLE ON THIS COMMISSION.
SO RATHER THAN HAVING ALL OF THESE 26 APPLICANTS COME, I MEAN, YOU GUYS, DID, YOU GUYS WORKED HARD, YOU WENT THROUGH ALL OF THOSE AND CAME UP WITH THIS AMOUNT OF PEOPLE ON THIS COMMISSION, BUT FROM HERE ON FORWARD, IT'S THE PROCESS THAT THE BOARD OF COMMISSIONS THAT'S WHAT'S, THAT'S WHAT IT SAID.
KATE, MS. BAKER HAD SOMETHING.
UM, GOING BACK TO THE QUESTIONS, THIS KIND OF ALLUDES TO WHAT YOU WERE SAYING, COULD MADAM CHAIR HAVE ANY INPUT ON THE QUESTIONS? LIKE FOR INSTANCE, IF SOMEONE APPLIES TO FILL THE SEAT, ONE QUESTION I WOULD ASK WHAT ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS HAVE YOU ATTENDED THAT THE COMMISSION HAS HELD TO SHOW THAT INTEREST AS FAR AS, YOU KNOW, WHAT WE DO, YOU KNOW, AND WHAT THEY CAN BRING TO THE TABLE.
SO THAT'S WHY I SAID, IF YOU KNOW, SOMEONE FROM THE COMMISSION IS THERE, WE CERTAINLY ASK OTHER QUESTIONS.
SO IF ANYBODY AT THE TABLE OF WHO'S INTERVIEWING HAS QUESTIONS, I MEAN, AND, AND COMMITMENT IS A BIG ONE WITH ALL THE BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS.
AND THAT IS SOMETHING THAT COMES UP A LOT AND YES, I'VE ATTENDED SOME OF THOSE.
I MEAN, THAT'S CERTAINLY, OKAY, HERE WE HAVE STANDARD QUESTIONS, BUT THEN OBVIOUSLY THERE'S FOLLOWUP ON SOME.
SO YES, BECAUSE I'M HAVING MADE THAT KNOWN TO MAYOR GOURD, THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE THIS ON ANOTHER BOARD, I WAS THE ONE THAT ARE AT EVERY EVENT AND EVERY MEETING, ROLLING THEIR SLEEVES UP THERE FROM START TO FINISH.
AND THERE ARE SOME PEOPLE WHO NEVER SHOW UP.
AND THE SAME INFORMATION THAT I WAS TOLD IS THE SAME INFORMATION THAT THEY WERE TOLD.
SO SOMEWHERE THERE HAS TO BE SOME TRANSPARENCY THAT THESE ARE NOT JUST SEATS THAT PEOPLE OCCUPIED.
THESE ARE WORKING BOARDS, OURS IS A WORKING BOARD AND THAT GOES FOR ALL
AND THEN THEY FINALLY THE ACTIVITY AMONG THE SONG.
YOU KNOW, ANY OF THE BOARDS, IT'S NOT JUST YOU ALL, BUT THAT'S ALL ANY AMIABLE.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE SURE THAT IT'S COMMUNICATED.
BECAUSE ON ARTS AND BEAUTIFICATION THAT WAS COMMUNICATED, THIS IS NOT LIKE THIS BOARD.
WE HAVE EVENTS, WE HAVE THINGS THAT YOU'LL HAVE TO SHOW UP TO.
ARE YOU ABLE TO SHOW UP TO THOSE EVENTS? AND THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS YES.
WELL, WELL, WELL, IT'S GOOD THAT I THINK SHE CLARIFIED THAT IN THIS CASE.
RIGHT? AND SO YOU ALONG THE REIDEL WILL BE THERE, UM, DURING THE INTERVIEW PROCESS OR AT LEAST AFFORDED AN OPPORTUNITY TO ASK ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS, QUESTION TO WRITE, TO, TO ASCERTAIN WHETHER OR NOT A, PERSON'S TRULY COMMITTED TO WHAT WE'RE DOING HERE.
SO I THINK WE HAVEN'T COVERED BECAUSE YOU ARE LOOKING FOR THAT GOOD FIT.
AND THAT'S WHY THE INTERVIEWS HAPPEN.
SOMEONE THAT'S PASSIONATE ABOUT DIVERSITY, BECAUSE IF YOU'RE NOT AND YOU JUST WANT TO, AND I'M JUST GOING TO PUT IT OUT THERE.
WE HAVE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY THAT ARE NOT PASSIONATE ABOUT DIVERSITY AND THEY, I DON'T WANT SOMEONE COMING ONE, OUR COMMISSION AND CREATING HAVOC AND STOPPING WHAT WE'VE STARTED.
SO, UM, I THINK THAT COHESIVENESS IS IMPORTANT.
ALL OF US HAVE A DIFFERENT THOUGHT.
WE WERE NOT ALL THE SAME PERSON.
WE ALL HAVE DIFFERENT OPINIONS ABOUT THINGS, BUT WE WORK WELL TOGETHER BECAUSE WE'RE PASSIONATE ABOUT DIVERSITY AND EQUITY AND INCLUSION.
AND SO THAT'S IMPORTANT TO ME AND I KNOW IT'S IMPORTANT TO ALL OF US AND I WILL DEFINITELY MAKE SURE THAT THAT IS REMAINED AND THE TIME COMMITMENT AS WELL.
[01:10:01]
WE HAD TALKED ABOUT IT, A DIAL, UM, ABOUT MINORITY HEALTH MONTH, WHICH IS IN APRIL.AND SO WE TALKED ABOUT DOING, LOOKING AT MINORITY HEALTH.
UM, I AM A EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBER FOR THE ASIAN AMERICAN COUNCIL AND THEY HOLD A HEALTH EXPO FOR, UM, FOR MINORITY HEALTH MONTH, EVERY YEAR.
AND NORMALLY IT'S IN, UM, PRE PANDEMIC COVID IT WAS IN KETTERING, SO, AND THEY HELD IT THROUGH THERE.
SO I HAD MENTIONED TO THEM ABOUT TALKING ABOUT THE EXHALE.
SO THEY ARE EXPLORING THAT IDEA IF WE WANT TO COLLABORATE WITH THEM AND DOING IT HERE IN HUBER HEIGHTS INSTEAD OF KEVIN.
AND THIS IS A, A DAY WHERE THEY HAVE DOCTORS FROM ALL OVER AND MAINLY, UM, DOCTORS FROM ALL OVER AND UNDERREPRESENTED DOCTORS, THEY COME AND THEY WILL OFFER BLOOD TESTING, TESTING, AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
IF IT'S THE VACCINE AT THE SAME TIME CLINIC, AT THE SAME TIME, THEY OFFER CLASSES ON AN EXERCISE ON HEALTH ISSUES THAT AFFECT DIFFERENT UNDERREPRESENTED COMMUNITIES, UM, COOKING, DEMONSTRATIONS, HEALTHY FOODS, THINGS LIKE THAT.
SO THEY, THEY, THEIR FIRST ONE WAS, UH, TWO YEARS AGO AND IT WAS PRETTY SUCCESSFUL.
SO THEY ARE WANTING TO START THIS UP AND DO THIS AGAIN.
AND BEFORE THEY REACH OUT TO KETTERING, I ASKED THEM IF, IF IT'S POSSIBLE, IF I CAN BRING THE PRESIDENT AND THE VICE PRESIDENT WOULD LIKE TO COME AND SPEAK TO OUR COMMISSION TO FOCUS ON WHAT THEIR EXPO IS.
AND IF THIS IS SOMETHING THAT WE COULD DO THAT, LIKE AT OUR COMMUNITY CENTER, THAT'S SOMETHING THAT WE, WE TALKED ABOUT.
UM, WHAT WE LEARNED FROM THAT DIAL, HOW IMPORTANT YOU HAVE ACCESS TO HEALTH CARE FOR THEM, LIKE IN EITHER DECEMBER OR I WOULD SAY DECEMBER, DECEMBER.
SO WE HAVE AN AMOUNT RADAR, IF SOMETHING THAT WE'RE GOING TO MOVE FORWARD WITH.
SO I'LL REACH OUT TO THEM JUST TO TALK AND DISCUSS IF THIS IS A POSSIBILITY OF A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THEIR ORGANIZATION AND OUR SOUNDS GOOD.
I THINK THAT IS EVERYTHING FOR TONIGHT.
SO OUR MEETING IS ADJOURNED AT EIGHT.
I'M, I'M JUST GIVING YOU AN OBSERVATION.
UM, I GO TO A COUPLE OF COUNCIL MEETINGS AND OUR COUNCIL MEETING, TIMOTHY HART, TIMOTHY HART, CLAY BACK DRIVE.
I GO TO A COUPLE OF COUNCIL MEETINGS AND HONESTLY OUR COUNCIL DOESN'T MAKE UP THE, UH, DOESN'T MAKE UP THE RECORD.
PROPER REPRESENTATION IS THERE'S NOT ENOUGH MINORITIES ON OUR COUNCIL.
AND, UH, I WOULD LIKE TO OFFER MY HELP TO TRY TO GET SOME QUALITY REPRESENTATIVES TO RUN FOR THESE WARDS AND, UH, SEE IF WE CAN'T MAKE IT A LITTLE MORE BALANCED BECAUSE IT'S NOT, AND IT'S NOT RIGHT IN MY OPINION.
UM, SO WE NEED, WE NEED TO EAT AND WE NEED TO GET, UH, THE COMMUNITY MORE INVOLVED IN VOTING.
UH, WE BASICALLY HAD AN ELECTION AND 10% OF THE TURNOUT.
SO 6% PICKS IT FOR THE OTHER 94%.
AND WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THAT.
ALSO, I FEEL, UM, AS FAR AS DAD, FIFTH KEY ADVOCACY, UM, THING, I THINK MAYBE A CLEAN UP THE PARKS DAY OR SOMETHING WOULD BE, WOULD BE KIND OF COOL CONTACTED LAST YEAR, UH, SHAW ABOUT THAT.
AND THEN, UH, ON THE, UH, ON THE BIDDING PROCESS, I THINK WE SHOULD, AT LEAST YOU, FOR ONE MINORITY BID ON EVERY BID THAT GOES OUT AT THE, AT THE MINIMAL, UM, THAT SEEMS HIGHLY POSSIBLE.
UM, I, A HUNDRED PERCENT AGREE, AGREE.
WE NEED MORE DIVERSITY IN THE HIRING OF CITY EMPLOYEES ALSO.
UM, THE RATIO'S NOT CORRECT IN MY EYES.
UM, AS FAR AS THE OUTREACH FOR THE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS, I OWN
[01:15:01]
MAYBE WE COULD GET THEM MOTIVATED WITH SOME FREE PASSES IF THEY ENTER AN ESSAY OR SOMETHING.UM, I'M WILLING TO DONATE SOMETHING IN THAT, THAT, UH, CAPACITY, IF, IF, IF IT WOULD HELP, UM, IN THE, UH, MINORITY HEALTH MONTH, THE QUALITY FOOD WOULD BE A HUGE THING.
CAUSE I THINK THAT WOULD, UH, BE VERY BENEFICIAL OTHER THAN THAT.
ALL RIGHT, MR. HART, WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE YOU JOIN US TO VOLUNTEER, OR WE ALSO HAVE A COMMISSION SEAT OPEN, SO THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR INPUT.
PAY THE PAYERS TO CHANGE THAT.
WELL, THANK YOU TO EVERYONE, MS. NEWBIE, MR. HART, UM, MS. KATE BAKER FOR COMING TO OUR MEETING TODAY AND OUR MEETING IS ADJOURNED AT EIGHT 19.
